Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Project Accountant to support the finance function within a dynamic, project-driven environment. Working closely with the Director of Finance, this role is responsible for managing project financials across multiple active developments, ensuring accurate cost tracking, reporting, and accounting integrity from project inception through completion.
The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can manage competing priorities, and is comfortable working across multiple departments to support financial accuracy and operational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Financial Accounting
- Maintain and manage full-cycle accounting for multiple project entities
- Track, monitor, and report on project costs against budgets and forecasts
- Ensure accurate coding, allocation, and posting of all project-related transactions
- Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting requirements
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
- Oversee timely and accurate processing of AP and AR transactions
- Match invoices to purchase orders and ensure proper approvals and documentation
- Track customer deposits and ensure proper application and reconciliation
- Support and review AP workflows to ensure accuracy and efficiency
Project Costing & Reporting
- Prepare and maintain monthly project budget updates and cost-to-complete reports
- Assist in preparing monthly project draw packages, including supporting schedules and lender documentation
- Monitor cash flow and assist with bank balance tracking and forecasting
- Update project proforma budgets with actuals and forecast adjustments
Stakeholder & Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate with internal departments to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate financial reporting
- Provide financial data and analysis to support management decision-making
- Assist legal and administrative teams with preparation of Statements of Adjustments for project closings
Compliance & Audit Support
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable financial reporting standards
- Assist with year-end audit preparation and coordination with external auditors
- Maintain accurate records in line with regulatory and reporting requirements
Process Improvement
- Support the development and implementation of improved accounting processes and systems
- Identify opportunities to enhance workflow efficiency and reporting accuracy
- Assist in implementing best practices across project accounting functions
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in project accounting or similar accounting role
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Experience in construction, real estate development, or project-based environments is an asset
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage 50, or similar)
- Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy in financial data handling
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
- Strong communication skills with ability to work across all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and sound judgment
- Ability to learn and adapt to internal systems and processes quickly
- Trustworthy, accountable, and professional in handling sensitive financial information
